I've spent a lot of time on this problem over the past four years. Bought two computers with wifi adapters not supported by the Linux kernel. Do yourself a favor. Find a USB adapter which explicitly claims to be Linux compatible. If your wifi signal is weak - mine is, as I'm using the landlord's router (with permission) - get one with a robust antenna.
