Are you sure the brightness refers to the keyboard backlight, and not to the screen brightness? I'm not familiar with Asus laptops, so I don't know exactly how the keyboard backlight works. On my Thinkpad, the keyboard backlight is set using Fn/Space. I don't know what an Asus uses, but I would be somewhat surprised to find that the brightness keys control the keyboard backlight. I've been surprised before, however.
