I used a 'guillotine method'. Modem card broke, so went to a computer shop, asked for a iron modem, that would work with Linux too.
Windows did not recognize the modem, but Linux on a CD with came with a book I had bought did.
That was common in the '90ies, as broadband was mostly in the unis', that there were books sold with companion cd-roms.
Changed to Debian the day got broadband to home.
