Have not used KDE since version 3, but I think those freezes happen, because usb is not the fastest method, even usb2.
May also be due that memory runs out.
This only guessing, as don't know specs of your computer.
So if you have a spare disk or partition, suggest trying out.
Nvidia has also been a bit of trouble, as the company changed it's policy. Some had got it working, but AMD and Intel are easier to set up.
