`CTRL-X` is the problem. `F10` works - I should be clear.
On the occasions I find myself in the grub command line, it seemed to me that any changes I made in grub did not persist. This since I had to ESC out of the command line, back to the top level grub menu. My understanding of grub is very limited. It is possible I have drawn the wrong conclusion about the effects of ESC-ing out of the grub commandline.
Currently I am fumbling around with partitions and frequently having to pick up the pieces in grub. I would feel more confident in these situations having all available tools at my disposal.
