Download a copy of the live ISO for the current version of KDE. Burn to flash drive (or copy to Ventoy drive, if you have one). Boot live session. Test opening the same files which are giving you trouble in the installed system. This will tell you whether it is the files or the system which has a problem. If you happen to have the live ISO for Buster available, you could use that for the test, but it's no longer available for download (as far as I know).
