General Questions • Re: System freeze in Debian 12

Just wanted to report that I have the same problem. I have Debian 10, and experience freezes, and unable to move mouse, the keyboard doesn't respond (Num/Caps lock lights are not responding).

But the freezes are not random, as some have said. I noticed that the freezes happen whenever I download files. So at first I thought it has something to do with disk IO and SSD, swap, storage etc. I disabled swap and the freeze happened again, after I downloaded a lot of files. Then I tested a different browser, and it happened there as well.

But then I remember that: every time I download something, that little "Save As" window appears which lets you chose where to save the file and chose a filename... so every time that window appears, it behaves sluggish, even if I do NOT download anything, and just hit Escape or cancel, it takes a second or 2 for that window to close. And the more I make the window appear and then disappear again by hitting escape/cancel, the longer it takes for the window to close.

I watch my memory usage during this with the command "

Code:

free -m
", and the "

Code:

used
" memory is constantly going up but not going down, whenever I want to download something and that "Save As" window appears. After about half an hour or an hour it takes about 3 or 4 seconds for that window to to close, and my RAM usage is almost completely full (around 7000 MB, I have 8 GB of total RAM). And that's when the entire system freezes.

Also, I noticed that when I either hit the Save button on that Save As window, or when I cancel the download, and a video is playing in the background, the system is blocking for a second or two (the longer I do this, the longer it is blocking), and the video stops for a second or two, but the audio keeps going. So this is related to graphics driver somehow.

Here is my inxi output:
