If firmware-radeon-graphics is not installed, you need to install it. Firmware-amd-graphics is for newer GPUs than your 5850.

I wrote the above last year in error. Radeon firmware in Debian is provided by firmware-amd-graphics. Its .deb package description contains:

Binary firmware for AMD/ATI graphics chips
This package contains the binary firmware for AMD/ATI graphics chips
supported by the radeon, amdgpu and r128 drivers.

Thus, a Radeon HD 5850 graphics card does need firmware-amd-graphics installed for competent operation.
