Okay, here is another solution that might help those of you on a desktop.
I went to the BIOS (or whatever it is called now) and disabled TPM (Trusted Platform Module).
Now the sleep issues are gone, even when removing the /etc/modprobe.d/ fix for my wireless card that I mentioned above.
I hope this helps someone, I know how frustrating these things are.
