I also ran $ systemctl --user restart pulseaudio.service, which did not help either

Having PulseAudio and Pipewire on the same system can cause sound to fail. KDE uses Pipewire by default; XFCE has not switched by default (I think - my XFCE installation used it), but will work fine with Pipewire (I have switched to Pipewire with Trixie XFCE).

What is the output of the following?

Code:

$ apt policy pipewire-audio

If it is not installed, consider installing pipewire-audio - it will make the switch to Pipewire and remove PulseAudio.

Restart afterwards if you decide to do so.
