You are logging in as root, then using sudo as root, which won't work. Don't log in as root, or else don't use sudo. Exactly how are you trying to start Protonvpn, and what is the result? Do you get error messages? Personally, I find it easier to just install the Proton VPN extension for Firefox, and start the VPN from Firefox as needed. I don't run Gnome, so I don't know what should happen after installing the gnome desktop app.
