I might not be the best to ask! Using sata with switches I do do, but not usb. I'm happy to use the cli to manage the infrequent times I switch a drive. Often I'll use the verve cli on Xfce where I don't need the feedback from an actual terminal.
With gnome, gdm, usb, and ntfs I'm out of my element.
If you iron out a cli sequence and do it on a regular basis, make a button. Again, my example would be for the Xfce DE, and a user with polkit rights. On Gnome I'm not familiar.
