Another MATE enthusiast here. Don't remember the exact year, but basically as soon as some update forced me from Gnome-2 to Gnome-3 and my workflow became like 5x less efficient. Fortunately a friend told about MATE a few months later.
When I heard about Wayland and first I was enthusiastic, but then things like refusal to implement deterministic window positions or deterministic monitor choice for fullscreen happened, so now I'm happy that MATE is on X11 on hopefully it will stay this way 
Linux user since 1996, last dual-boot with Windows around 1999 (±1, Win98), my 21st century was mostly Windows-free
