Since it is a Mac, I would check everything works.
Here have been many posts of Mac problems with Debian.
I'd put XFCE.
FWIW, the USB port and wifi, at the least, work correctly, the display is happy, and the only reason I don't keep it for my own backup is it's limited to 8 GB RAM.
As you say it's a new install, I reckon just creating a new user with adduser command and deleting old user with deluser would be much easier than reinstalling. Article on how to do it here - https://linuxize.com/post/how-to-add-an ... on-debian/
Well, i turns out he doesn't want it anyway -- he's used to using tablets (like iPad, I think -- and his security for a discarded one is to physically destroy it; I don't have time to explain that someone who wants it badly enough can still read out the flash storage). He's likely to hurt himself if he tries that with a 2011 Macbook Pro when it won't do what he needs any more...
