I've also solved the second problem with Firefox (simple solution really that I found here), so I'll edit the first post now. Thanks again for all the help.
Unfortunately, I still can't operate some of my Windows software I need for work, which has been the only reason I didn't switch to Linux many moons ago. Same for my banking stuff. I tried Bottles, KVM/Qemu, Winboat, all to no avail. But I'm so fed up with Windows, and so impressed by Debian, that I've decided to stick with it. I've installed Win7 on an old laptop I fixed a while ago, and use that solely for work.
