I can speak on this one, most Software Developers have an $EMPLOYED-BY-JOB and $VOLUNTEER-CONTRIBUTION-ROLE. The 2 do not really overlap as much as one would think. Someone could work at $MONOLITH-INC while still doing F/LOSS work.Rob Pike is angry about an email from Claude Opus?
Claude Opus is created by Anthropic.
Anthropic is sponsored by Google.
Rob Pike works at Google.
There is no reason for him to complain.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthropic ... nvestmentsIf he really cared about our planet, he would not work at Google. In October 2023, Google invested $500 million in Anthropic and committed to an additional $1.5 billion over time. In March 2025, Google agreed to invest another $1 billion in Anthropic.
One of the gripes expressed here in some viewpoints is that F/LOSS works are being used without attribution by large companies and with the growth of AI a lot of natural resources are being wasted that result in toxic environmental damage such as frequent hardware turnover with still new machines/devices being dumped into landfills in favor of the newest and fastest in processing power; This is a known and valid complaint about the real cost of AI and large infrastructure development toward it.
The other gripe is that commercial products are being used in the wild based on F/LOSS works that are then turned around to take credit for or flaunt that work back to the same communities that developed the initial and groundwork. It is quite insulting even from my viewpoint. It's like you made a paper plane in kindergarten and then the next year some AeroSpace platform built the plane and took all of the credit for it, meanwhile to get that data they broke into your house rummaged through every drawer and closet, left a mess behind, and did not even dare to have the courtesy to wipe their feet on the doormat before leaving the front door and every window open.
Internally I suppose someone working at $EMPLOYED-BY-JOB can and does advocate for less obfuscated crediting and probably preaches the value of the F/LOSS works but someone at $COMPANY-A cannot stop something from $COMPANY-B doing something. Nor does the Janitor or Code Developer in section A of $MONOLITH-INC get to determine where and what the larger company does.
I guess a poor example of this would be political in that if your country does something, and you are vocal about it via voting, yet your country still does it, could we use your same argument saying if you really cared about the issue that you should just move out of said country? I'd think you would chose to stay there and affect change internally, YMMV.
