Do you have wifi running? Or how you came to conclusion dongles don't work? Can you try in a different usb-port? Alt-F4 shows system messages during installation.
The dongle must be in place before network is detected, changing after that does not help, if you don't go back.
Can you move your computer closer to the router?
I too use expert installer, and in quite end it asks should non-free and sources be enabled.
I would suggest stripping any esoteric systems to minimum before upgrading. You can tinker that after upgrading.
