That terminal-only OS prompt permits you to login and edit /etc/fstab to append ",nofail" to the existing options for the external drive in fstab, then reboot to see if you can reach the sddm login screen normally, whether or not the external is able to be mounted. If successful, then troubleshooting mounting the external becomes next order of business.
Well I'm not sure how linux would even boot if the external wasn't mounted since everything, the boot, swap, and root partitions, are all on that external, but whatever. I tried just adding 'nofail' to the root partition and that didn't do anything.
