Hi
I have been trying to upgrade a PM from 12 to 13. This machine has had various upgrades done going back to V7 as I recall but its been a long time. Each was done in sequence following major version release over time.
This update has had a number of issues. Firstly it gave an error that the running kernel was going to be removed and this caused the upgrade to abort. This then left the system unable to contact the repositories as it had removed the DNS lookup packages but not put the new ones on. I have edited my hosts file to point de.debian.org and security.debian.org to IP addresses and then re-run apt update, which then allowed the apt full-upgrade to resume running.
I am now stuck with the following dependence that I don’t seem to be able to fix as sysvinit is a critical package and cant be removed / updated when I try and do this manually.
"The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libc6 : Breaks: sysvinit (< 3.09-2~) but 2.88dsf-41+deb7u1 is to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
"
If I try and installed systemd (which I think is the replacment for sysvinit) I get the following error:
"The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libc6 : Breaks: sysvinit (< 3.09-2~) but 2.88dsf-41+deb7u1 is to be installed
systemd : PreDepends: libsystemd-shared (= 257.9-1~deb13u1) but 252.39-1~deb12u1 is to be installed
Depends: libsystemd0 (= 257.9-1~deb13u1) but 252.39-1~deb12u1is to be installed
Recommends: default-dbus-system-bus or
dbus-system-bus
Recommends: systemd-timesyncd but it is not going to be installed or
time-daemon
Recommends: systemd-cryptsetup but it is not installable
sysvinit : PreDepends: initscripts (>= 2.88dsf-13.3) but it is not going to be installed
PreDepends: sysv-rc but it is not going to be installed or
file-rc but it is not installable
E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caued by held packages.
"
I’m assuming something has gone wrong with the various versions of packages on the system over multiple dist upgrades over the years?
Any help would be appreciated as this is a live environment and ideally I need it back up by Monday! I also only have one console available to me which was the one that I was logged into as root when I started this process, and am trying to avoid shutting it down.
