I definitely wasnt expecting this many replies, although I got no email notifications, so I assumed noone had replied.

Anyway, he's currently running Debian with the KDE desktop, in VirtualBox. .....

I also suggested that he try installing Arch Linux, for a learning experience. They also have plenty of good documentation for people that are willing to read, it's hard to mess up badly if you read carefully and think things through.
...
My 2 cents after reading all posts above.
It is my own personal point of view anyway. I am not with or against any distro or any Linux.
I am on Linux since 2000 and tried lots of distros.

If it is me, and assuming I am a noob, and assuming as well as I am another guy experienced with Linux who will advise the noob.
- As experienced with Linux I would advise me the noob to stick to a Debian based - but not any Ubuntu (I just didn't like it)
- So, I may recommend to him (I see he like KDE), or Debian provided he is a bit techie and he can manage.
- A little bit more user and noob friendly maybe MX Linux
- No, Arch or Arch based, (I've been there and I enjoyed EndeavourOS really), but because I started having my own cloud (Resilio Sync) on my laptops I converted to Debian. Arch/ Arch based requires some work from the user all the time.

So, in a few words, if he is OK and can manage Debian, then it is Debian, If he needs something a bit more noob friendly then MX Linux.
If he is curious, wants to learn and doesn't mind then EndeavourOS.

I hope this helps.
I am eager to know how is it going with your friend. Just curious and waiting for the great news that he installed Linux only and ditched Windoze!
