Hello,
For the leave the portable device on the bus scenario, I choose to maximize security and operate with Linux kernel lockdown mode enabled. I think that blocks hibernate to disk?? Also there is a worry some nefarious party could analyze the hibernating disk file and learn confidential things like bank account numbers, if such were open in the hibernating session. Or is that an urban legend....
So the short answer is I don't use hibernate.
The hibernation data is usually inside the luks volume so it is encrypted. When you use suspend your RAM contents is unencrypted.
