Well, I'm not certain why, but I seem to have fixed my problem. I changed the display manager to LXDM, which I don't like, then back to SDDM, and suddenly I can log in to Wayland sessions. Presumably there was an issue with the SDDM configuration, and there may still be, because I get an error popup saying that a file is not writable. I tried to copy the filename, but it apparently didn't work, and I can't remember the exact filename or location. But clicking through that brings up the SDDM login screen which works.
