Emby turned out to be the right choice. It's very easy to set up and it suits my needs perfectly.Sounds to me like what you want is a media server. If you're only interested in watching one video a DLNA server like minidlna would probably do but if you're looking for a media server solution than something like jellyfin, emby or Plex would be more appropriate.
minidlna is available in Debian, unfortunately the other three media servers I mentioned are not. I personally run Plex which meets my needs pretty well but costs about €5 a month or about €120 for a lifetime pass that unlocks all the features. All three media servers have the ability to convert video into something your TV supports if that's needed (this is called transcoding) but on Plex hardware transcoding is a paid feature. Software transcoding may work and is free but will beat up your CPU pretty well.
So my recommendations? Plex for a paid solution, jellyfin for a free solution, minidlna if you only want to watch one video.
Hope this helps -
