@dilberts_left_nut: way too detailed.
@blackbird: grabbing a test console, in the way that you suggested, was not possible during boot up due to the laptop "hanging" at "start sddm service". As for setting up a blacklist, I have never done/needed that before. Still, I thank you for your suggestions. I can see that they might have solved the problem if I knew a bit more about the system..
@rolf3945: I am not too familiar with using rescue mode from stick/dvd. In particular, I have not before had to remove a multi-multi-file graphics driver. I was not sure where to look for it let alone what commands to use.
In the end I went for the easy option and just did a full re-install. That was bad enough but then I had a massive update to apply, 387 packages, with the updater process stating that the repo had moved from 12.5 to 12.7. At least it is done now.
