OK, I was trying to narrow this down and I found the answer.
I looked in the script file thinking the only thing, command wise, would have been in the mounting and unmounting of the USB and the copy commands.
What I found was a updatedb command which I was using in another distro way back when. That command, when run as root, displays the error. I tried the script without updatedb and received no errors.
I want to, again, thank everyone for the responses. I wish I had found this before I started the thread, it's quite embarrassing.
It's still strange that it only happens in Debian. There could be a good reason I just don't know what it is.
