Testing And Unstable • Re: [Testing - Trixie] Installation on old machine

Thank you, Bulkley, but I was aware that problems may show up during installation of the testing version, as well as I am aware of potential problems during daily use. I just thought it may be useful to mention the encountered issues.

In the case of my laptop, there used to be issues around the ALC850 sound chip, and I had gathered from the people working on them that my only hope (aside from compiling and integrating myself some kernel modules, which I have tried without success) is to wait until support is built into the kernel. I did that, and when kernel 6.8 came around, I suddenly had sound! So my only constraint is: shipped kernel version >= 6.8; it does not have to be the latest.

I prefer identical install on both machines for various reasons, but mainly because I do some stuff with Qt Creator, and I just came through a quite painful transition from Qt5 to Qt6.

I agree with you regarding the OS and software installed on older machines, but on the other hand, my old PC still runs fine with the latest software (aside from the nVidia driver: have to use the Tesla version), and for as long as it can run the same software as the laptop, I will keep it updated, since when I am at home, I prefer to work with it.

And right now, I have both machines up and running, fully installed with all the stuff that I need, so my message to other newcomers is: even if issues occur during installation, they tend to be solvable, so don't give up; it's worth it!
