Two other things of detail that I saved, that might be helpful. Seeing the warnings, and then once I saw it generated the wrong file in /boot, I saved this:
The output from synaptic package manager installation of 1 package plus dependencies.

So it found 4 images in /boot
but os-prober only found the 3 on sda, none from sdb
Maybe that's a bug, not searching the partition that the current OS is running from.
Then only 1 version in /lib/modules, and it errors with warning there for wrong version.
That's probably it. I have not been booting from sdb for very long. It used to work because I used to only boot from sda.
